Common Knee Conditions & Injuries

Feeling pain in the knee joint and a swollen knee joint are usually the first signs that there is something potentially medically wrong with your knee. The knee is a complex joint and one that is prone to injury and general wear and tear by its very nature. Taking care of our joints as we age is important, but it is equally important for young people too, especially those people who are very active, as this group of people are particularly pone to sport injuries.

The knee joint is situated between the thigh bone (femur) and the shin bone (tibia) with the kneecap (patella) sitting in front. Ligaments hold the joint together and it’s surrounded by a joint capsule, which holds the joint lubricant fluid. There are many different kinds of conditions, some more common than others, that can affect the knee joint and cause symptoms such as swelling and pain, which if left untreated, can lead to severe disability. The most common first symptom to appear is pain and it is usually fairly localised within the knee. However, sometimes the symptoms can be more widespread and may be felt in the shin area.
